In
Liliane's third collection of mishaps, she accidentally poses for a
pornographer, gets royally screwed trying to get pregnant, and comes
face to face with some of the hypocrisies of gender identity. As usual,
she always manages to remind us that yes, one day we will be able to
laugh at all of this. Someday.
Leanne Franson has reached into the depths of
her crazy bag of "learning experiences" and pulled out another winner.
It never ceases to amaze me how much expression and emotion she can
pack into Liliane with just a few perfectly placed lines, but after
just a few pages you want to invite her over to your place for coffee
and a nice long rant session!
The most touching and heartbreaking of the stories
is the one where Liliane, already depressed over her lack of a
relationship and inability to get pregnant, tries to join a group that
will allow her to help teach kids about homosexuality in schools. When
she is denied because she proudly proclaims that she is a bisexual, I
wasn't sure if my tears were from anger or sadness, but I felt her
disappointment in the deepest part of my soul.
Although my all-time favorite story is in Franson's second book, Teaching Through Trauma, I wouldn't think for a moment of skipping Crotte. Whatever your sexuality, it's easy to see yourself in Liliane and her misadventures, and believe me, that's half the fun!
